It doesn’t appear that EA is involved in the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake.
This week at Sony’s PlayStation Showcase event, Aspyr’s KOTOR remake was finally confirmed to be available on PC and PlayStation 5 exclusively on console launch.
Aspyr – the Texas-based studio that has collaborated with Lucasfilm on various projects for over a decade, including ports from the original Knights of the Old Republic to iPhone and iPad – was recently swallowed up by Embracer Group, the company constantly growing which also owns Gearbox, maker of Borderlands.
Whether EA is involved in the eye-catching KOTOR remake seems reasonable to me, given that EA owns BioWare, the developer of the original game.
Game Awards chief Geoff Keighley asked the same question and asked EA. His response is both hilarious and frustrating. Rather than just saying “yes, of course we’re helping” or “no we’re not involved, sorry,” EA chose to state that it makes Star Wars games – and that’s it.
I asked Bioware (and EA) if they were involved in the STAR WARS: KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC remake announced yesterday and just got this response.
So I guess it’s not? pic.twitter.com/mwa1FDdbjE

That’s right: when asked if it helps with the KOTOR remake, EA’s response was, “We make Star Wars games.”
The video game industry is used to producing this kind of hopelessly stupid non-response. EA is not the only one in this case! But this one borders on the ridiculous. I am guessing BioWare is not involved, as EA and Lucasfilm surely would have said so if that was the case. I think EA’s statement is an attempt to remind people that while that doesn’t work on the KOTOR remake, it’s still important on the Star Wars stuff, but who knows?
At least BioWare itself was clearer on the situation:
We’re proud of the work we did on the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and can’t wait to play the Aspyr remake! As we continue our work on Star Wars: The Old Republic, we’ll be watching it with great interest. May the force be with you.

Here’s what we know for sure: The remake will be released on PS5 by Sony Interactive Entertainment, while the PC version of the game will be released by Aspyr himself. Aspyr “works closely with Lucasfilm Games”.
