Reminder: nearly 57 tonnes of ground beef for E coli possible

CARROLLTON, GA (AP) – The federal government said that a Georgia meat company had recalled tons of ground beef due to possible contamination with E. coli bacteria.

The bacteria is an unusual strain that sickened 156 out of 10 people, 20 of whom were hospitalized. Ground beef was described as the probable source. However, officials say they are still testing to see if the recalled beef is linked to the outbreak.

A recall from the US Department of Agriculture Food Safety Inspection Service indicates that K2D Foods recalls approximately 56.7 tonnes (51.4 tonnes) of meat. K2D operates as Colorado Premium Foods in Carrollton, Georgia. The meat is in 48-pound boxes labeled "ground beef slice" for institutional use.

Calls to the company's headquarters in Greeley, Colorado, did not immediately return.
