Renault has the engine needed two years ago

Sainz has spent the last four seasons in F1 with Renault Power. He drove for the team of the French manufacturer at the end of 2017 and until 2018.

Renault's lack of progress, particularly in qualifying versions, has been a key factor in the break-up of its relationship with Red Bull and left McLaren as sole customer for 2019.

After an encouraging qualifying performance at the Australian Grand Prix opening season, Sainz said he could "feel a change" in Renault's competitiveness.

"I feel a step in the right direction," said Sainz. "I still think we're a little late on the Ferrari and Mercedes engines, but we definitely feel like we have something to fight, at last.

"I did four years in Formula 1, all four years were 10 km / h on all straight lines.

"So, finally, getting to Melbourne and doing only 2/3 km / h, perhaps among the best teams, is a very encouraging scenario.

"They seem to have clear ideas on how to develop the engine during the year, which also gives a positive impression.

"I want to congratulate Renault in this sense because it finally seems that they have taken the step we needed two years ago."

Sainz retired from the Australian GP early with an alleged failure of the MGU-K.

He said it was a problem that Renault had already experienced in pre-season testing, but Renault did not comment on it.

Sainz hoped that his fiery outing of the race was unique and claimed that he had not eliminated his positivity after qualifying.

"I trust Renault, they have taken steps, so hope we can continue to push," he said after the grand prix.
