Renault in Bahrain: a "brutal moment"

The German was about to be ranked in the top six, after fighting in a 'war zone' in a first round, but he was deprived of a very good result when he had a motor problem two laps from home.

Moments later, Ricciardo stopped at the same bend with what was later confirmed as a problem with MGU-K.

Hulkenberg said that he also had trouble accepting that a good result had been removed so quickly.

"In my mind, I had already booked," he said. But that just shows that you have to take it home.

"Without that, three turns, I controlled everything. I had a hole [Lando] Norris and all was well. He also came without any sign or problem before. It happened from one moment to the next.

"It's a bitter case, difficult to swallow. A brutal moment that can happen in the race.

"But on the plus side, we had a decent pace in the car today, and yesterday and today, the problems prevented very good results."

Hulkenberg managed to get through the pack from the 17th position on the grid, after what he described as a crazy opening segment of the race.

"The first step was like a war zone. It was crazy, he said. "Cars everywhere, contacts, sparks, flying parts – I've had a hard blow to the helmet of a room as well. Everything was in this race.

"It was a spectacular race. I made a lot of overtaking, it was fun.

"It would have been really nice to reward myself and the team with these points, but we just have to bounce another time."

Team director Cyril Abiteboul said Renault had "already met" with recent problems, which he says are becoming "more and more frustrating and unacceptable".

"After a very busy winter, our racing season started very badly," said Abiteboul.

"As in Melbourne, our qualifications in Bahrain were heavily compromised by minor electronic problems, which affected both cars.

"Our race has stopped today so close to the finish. These are problems we have already encountered but something that we have not been able to rectify in Bahrain.

"These problems are becoming more and more frustrating and unacceptable, as both cars have shown very good competitiveness, both on a lap and on races.

"Nico delivered another outstanding record from the seventeenth to the sixth rank.

"Daniel relies on valuable experience in the car and despite a good race pace, his strategic bet did not work.

"Daniel will continue to familiarize himself with the car during this week's tests of performance work.

"We must react and focus on reliability."
