While we expected the flagship OnePlus 10 to be the next of the company’s phones, rumors suggest we’re getting the more affordable OnePlus 9RT instead – and a new leak shows the phone in what looks like official renderings. .
Before we dig into the leak, we’ve now heard that the phone will launch on October 13. It is believed to be a China-only launch for now, but there is also a possibility that the phone will eventually land in India.
The OnePlus 9R hasn’t come to the US or Europe, so we don’t currently expect you to be able to buy this handset in those regions.
Famous leaker Evan Blass aka @evleaks tweeted a trio of photos showing the back of the alleged OnePlus 9RT in crisp detail.
These appear to be press renderings, although they look crisp enough to be photos, and the latest image even has a neat OnePlus-style red box, lending the leaks extra authenticity.
From the photos, the OnePlus 9RT appears to have slightly rearranged cameras compared to the OnePlus 9 Pro, and might contain one more lens than the OnePlus 9, suggesting it might have a wider photographic range.
Blass followed the footage with a cryptic tweet with a single word, “Martin” – potentially a code name for the phone. It also included the numbers 10/13, which were then confirmed a few hours later as the launch date of the new handset.
Analysis: OnePlus 9RT isn’t the OnePlus phone we’ve been expecting
The OnePlus 9RT certainly isn’t the phone we originally expected – for years the company released an updated version of this year’s flagship as a ‘T’ brand model.
So, we were planning to release a OnePlus 9T in October or November which would refine the functionality of the OnePlus 9 and possibly add more benefits. Then last month, OnePlus confirmed to TechRadar that there would be no OnePlus 9T.
Instead, the company appears to be focusing on the OnePlus 9RT which will likely only be available in China and India.
Presumably, this would follow the OnePlus 9R released in April 2021 as a more affordable alternative to the OnePlus 9 with slightly less impressive specs – a Snapdragon 870 instead of the main Snapdragon 888, for example. This phone was only released in India, so the OnePlus 9RT could be an updated version with a larger version, but we haven’t learned where it will arrive yet.
What did we hear from it? Several OnePlus 9RT spec leaks to suggest will have the same Snapdragon 870 chipset, 4,500mAh battery, and 65W fast charging speed as the 9R, but a slightly improved 50MP main camera.
Another rumor claims that a Geekbench score was achieved by a OnePlus 9RT with a Snapdragon 888 chipset, so there is a possibility that the phone will boost the performance of its more mid-range predecessor to flagship speeds. We’ll wait and see how those predictions come to fruition, however.
