The hit Broadway show “Aladdin” was canceled Wednesday night when groundbreaking COVID-19 cases were reported within the music company, a day after the show reopened after approximately 18 months of closure due to the pandemic . It was a worrying sign for the revival of Broadway.
“Thanks to our rigorous testing protocols, groundbreaking cases of COVID-19 have been detected in the company of ‘Aladdin’ at the New Amsterdam Theater,” the show announced on social media. “Because the well-being and safety of our guests, cast and crew are our top priority, tonight’s performance, Wednesday, September 29, has been canceled.”

This was Broadway’s first COVID-19 cancellation since the shows resumed with the return of Bruce Springsteen’s concert in July and “Pass Over” as the first play to debut in August. “Aladdin” said the status of future performance “will be updated.”
The pandemic forced Broadway theaters to abruptly close on March 12, 2020, eliminating all shows and scrambling the spring season. Several have rebooted, including the so-called big three of “Wicked”, “Hamilton” and “The Lion King”.
