ReOpenNC supporters rally to support Wendell General Store, against mask warrant :: WRAL.com

– About 100 people gathered in Wendell on Saturday morning to show their support for a store owner who had refused to enforce the statewide mask warrant intended to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Governor Roy Cooper’s most recent executive order requires masks to be worn in all public indoor environments and asks businesses over 15,000 square feet to enforce this by posting an employee at all entrances.

Wendell General Store owner Regina Harmon was cited on Wednesday with one count of aiding and abetting the violation of an executive order after Wendell Police received a complaint that Harmon’s store posted signs that read: “Masks are not required, exceptions to every rule” and “We ask that you do not wear a face mask, for the safety of our customers and staff. “

Violation of the mask’s warrant is a Class 2 felony and could result in a fine of up to $ 1,000.

Local businesses cited for COVID-19 missteps

The ReOpenNC group, which formed in resistance to coronavirus shutdowns in the spring, turned out on Saturday to support Harmon, waving flags and shouting slogans.

“We are right, and this is our fight,” said a man over a megaphone.

One speaker expressed surprise at the need to “defend all of our rights to breathe freely”.

“This will not be the last case we will have to mobilize for,” said one speaker.
