Republican Andy Harris was barred from entering House chambers with a gun on Thursday by metal detectors set up after the Capitol siege on Jan.6, The Huffington Post reported.

The outlet said it saw metal detectors go off when Harris entered. Next, an officer detected a gun on the congressman’s side when he scanned it with a metal detection rod. The gun was concealed by Harris’ coat.

A Capitol official later confirmed to HuffPost that Harris had a gun on him. Capitol Police did not respond to Insider’s request for comment at the time of posting.

Harris could not be reached for comment at the time of posting.

HuffPost added that they saw Harris attempting to convince Rep. John Katko to hold his gun as he went to vote. Katko reportedly told Harris that he did not have a license and refused to hold the gun. Harris then left and returned 10 minutes later, this time without setting off any alarms and heading inside the House bedroom, HuffPost reported.

Congress implemented new security measures, including installing metal detectors the week after supporters of then-President Donald Trump violated the U.S. Capitol and clashed with the forces of Order, interrupting a joint session of Congress as lawmakers were set to formalize President Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election. The riot resulted in the deaths of five people.

Several House Republicans flouted the security measure, with several refusing to cross them during their initial implementation.

Lauren Frias of Insider previously reported that GOP freshman Lauren Boebert was on the DC police radar after posting an ad saying she would “carry my gun to DC and Congress.”

This prompted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to announce that Congress would fine those who refuse to comply with the new testing protocols of $ 5,000 for the first offense and $ 10,000 for the second.
