The San Francisco 49ers have been the subject of rumors and have apparently been linked with every available quarterback. The team currently has two quarterbacks under contract for 2021: Jimmy Garoppolo and Josh Johnson.
CJ Beathard is an unrestricted free agent. The former third-round pick had a chance to prove the team should bring him back last season, but Beathard hasn’t done enough to instill confidence in him.
Nick Mullens is a restricted free agent. When you are shot for Beathard, the writing is on the wall. Mullens recently had elbow surgery which won’t prevent him from missing out on the 2021 season, but you imagine that will factor into the Niners’ decision to bring Mullens back next season.
That brings us to Josh Rosen, who, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, reported that the 49ers are bringing back the agent free of exclusive rights. San Francisco has yet to submit an offer to Rosen, but Garafolo said it should be done soon.
For now, we’re looking at a quarterback room that includes Jimmy, Rosen, and Johnson, although it makes sense to add a rookie at some point during the NFL Draft. In the NFL Network article, this stood out:
It seems like everyone wants a quarterback or is ready to upgrade. The Bears, Colts, 49ers, Panthers, Washington, Patriots, Jets and Broncos are among those who have at least made one phone call regarding a QB.
The report leads by talking about negotiations for Carson Wentz. That’s not to say San Francisco specifically named Wentz, but it could mean that the team were indeed interested in Matthew Stafford or put on feelers for a guy like Wentz.
Kyle Shanahan left the door open at the end of the season when he said the team are looking to level up to quarterback. I find it hard to believe the team didn’t call Stafford, and there have been conflicting reports on this. If the Niners were on Stafford I’d bet they’re going to be interested in guys like Wentz and whatever else is out there.
It sounds like a “Jimmy is our guy” situation until he’s not.
