Report: 49ers to win draft pick after losing executive Martin Mayhew

The 49ers will earn another draft pick by losing vice president of player personnel Martin Mayhew.

Mayhew, 55, was hired by Washington as general manager, ESPN reported on Thursday after multiple reports said the team would make former Carolina general manager Marty Hurney its general manager. On Wednesday, it was reported that Mayhew would join Washington as a “high-ranking leader” with an undetermined title.

Hurney will always be part of the Washington front office.

Mayhew had been Detroit’s general manager before joining the 49ers. As a player, he spent four seasons with Washington.

With Mayhew becoming the third black general manager hired in the NFL this year, the 49ers will earn another future third-round pick based on the new NFL program that rewards teams for developing assistant coaches and minority executives hired as head coaches or general managers.

The 49ers received a third-round pick in the next two drafts last week when defensive coordinator Robert Saleh was hired as the Jets’ head coach. Because the 49ers have now had two minority employees left for important roles, they will receive a third round pick in 2021, 2022 and 2023. The picks will come after the compensatory selections in the third round.
