The Buccaneers put cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting on the injured list this week due to an elbow injury that knocked him out of Game 1 and it’s not yet clear how long he’ll be out.

Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians said this week that the team are still waiting to see if Murphy-Bunting will be able to return this season and that they have been considering some options to fill the job pool while ‘he was out of alignment. Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports that the team have contacted free agent Richard Sherman following the injury.

Carlton Davis also suffers from a hamstring injury, but the Bucs have not moved to sign Sherman. Time will tell if more clarity on the Murphy-Bunting timeline leads to a different decision.

Pelissero reports that the 49ers have maintained contact with Sherman, who has spent the past three seasons with the NFC West club. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan called Sherman’s re-signing a possibility after Jason Verrett tore his ACL in Week 1 but, like the Bucs, they chose to go into another management and signed Dr. Kirkpatrick this week.

Sherman has pleaded not guilty to five counts of misdemeanor, including DUI and criminal trespassing after an incident involving his wife in July. The resolution of these charges could result in league discipline for Sherman.
