A new report says the Cleveland Cavaliers are in discussions with other teams regarding a trade for Collin Sexton, while also hoping to deal with veteran forward Kevin Love.
Kelly Iko of The Athletic examined how the Cavaliers ‘potential moves could impact the Houston Rockets’ second cap as the potentials of top prospects Jalen Green and Evan Mobley are examined.
“A wild card: the Cleveland Cavaliers and the No.3 pick,” Iko wrote. “There has been a debate about the direction the Cavaliers will take on draft night. Mobley was mentioned extensively there, as well as the potential of Green and even Suggs. The Cavs are also engaging teams in business talks regarding goaltender Collin Sexton and hope to move Kevin Love and his remaining $ 60 million elsewhere, per source. “
Just three years ago, Sexton was the Cavs’ eighth overall pick, with concerns about a contract extension being one of the main reasons for trade talks.
How much Sexton can improve in the years to come and how much the Cavs would have to pay to hold him back have sparked debates over the value of a large investment.
There has also been some debate over exactly how much the Cavaliers could get in exchange for Sexton, with some people noting even worth a high pick.
In Love’s case, the Cavaliers could end up simply buying the 32-year-old veteran over the last two years of his contract. His frequent injuries and huge annual salary kept teams from offering him anything of value.
At this point, the Cavaliers seem ready to offer Love to any team willing to take it. Those teams should be hopeful that Love, who turns 33 in September, can start offering double doubles every night again.
One sure hope for the Cavaliers is that this draft marks the last time they have a lottery pick and their arduous rebuilding process picks up speed.
