Report: Cavs tried to trade draft spots to acquire RJ Barrett in 2019

Continuing rumors of a possible Collin Sexton trade have led to reflections on how the Cleveland Cavaliers made efforts to trade ahead of the 2019 NBA Draft to select RJ Barrett.

Cleveland.com’s Chris Fedor considered a possible exchange of Sexton with the New York Knicks and pointed to the possible inclusion of Barrett, noting Cleveland’s past interest in the goalie.

“The Cavs were wowed by RJ Barrett ahead of the 2019 draft,” Fedor wrote. “They even tried to swap a few spots, sources said. Barrett wouldn’t be considered untouchable, seen as a potential centerpiece of the trade if the Knicks go all-star hunting. After a solid second season in which the 21-year-old averaged 17.6 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists while hitting 40.1% on a 3-point range and started all 72 games, it’s hard to see the Knicks part ways with him for Sexton – and then agree to give Sexton a huge contract.

In the end, the Cavaliers ended up signing Darius Garland, who continues to become a strong NBA goalie, although perhaps not as far along as Barrett.

The uncertainty surrounding Sexton’s obtaining the signature of a contract extension is one of the reasons for his possible exchange. What Cleveland offers and what Sexton thinks he is worth is probably very different.

Sexton, 22, has racked up solid numbers over his three seasons with the Cavaliers, but exactly where he will fit into the squad’s roster in the future is another reason for the trade rumors.

Sexton was the eighth pick overall in the 2018 NBA Draft and what the Cavaliers might get in return for him remains unknown. However, at the moment, it seems obvious that Barrett will not be part of such a deal.
