Report: CEOs Earn 299 Times More Than Average Workers; 34 CN Executives Surpass $ 5 Million

The difference between CEO salary and median employee salary increased in 2020 despite the Covid pandemic and ongoing relief efforts. This included North Carolina, where the salaries of 34 senior executives exceeded $ 5 million.

The average CEO of an S&P 500 company earned 299 times the average salary of a worker last year, according to the AFL-CIO’s annual Executive Paywatch report. “This is consistent with what we’ve seen year after year,” AFL-CIO secretary-treasurer Liz Schuler said at a press conference with reporters on Wednesday. “The inequalities, the imbalance in our economy, make it clear in this report that compensation for CEOs and workers continues to be a major issue in this country.”

The highest paid CEO in 2020 was Paycom’s Chad Richison, who received more than $ 200 million in salaries and shares that vest over time. Other companies whose executives top the list of highest paid CEOs include General Electric, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Hilton, T-Mobile, Nike, Microsoft and Netflix.

The most skewed pay scale belonged to Aptiv, which had a CEO-to-employee pay ratio of 5,294: 1 last year. While the company’s CEO, Kevin Clark, was paid more than $ 31 million in 2020, the median salary of his employees was $ 5,906.

Other companies topping the list include The Gap, Paycom, Chipotle, Hilton, Nike and Coca-Cola.

Companies in the consumer discretionary sector, including retailers like Amazon, exhibited the greatest disparity with an average CEO-to-employee ratio of 741: 1.

A conversation in progress

There has been growing interest in the difference between executive pay and other workers at large companies since the 2008 recession, when federal officials asked companies to publicly disclose this data.

At the start of the coronavirus pandemic last year, many CEOs and top executives announced they would either take a pay cut or give up their pay altogether. The growing difference between CEO and worker pay comes after a year of economic turmoil and in the midst of an economic recovery.
