According to ProFootballTalk Mike Florio, Indianapolis Colts are the only obvious contender for Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz, as Eagles quickly lose influence regarding the exchange of their former franchisee during ongoing negotiations:
“Two years ago, the Eagles came up with the idea that they were going to tag and trade Nick Foles,” writes Florio. “When they realized that no one would trade a Nick Foles franchise. The Eagles haven’t tagged him. In this case, common sense suggests the Eagles will end up taking what they can get for Wentz.
“Right now the Eagles have an obvious suitor. Unless someone joins the Colts at the table, the Eagles will trade Wentz only on terms the Colts offer.
While the price asked by the Eagles general manager Howie roseman would have been absurd– with a rumor that at least two first-round picks in one Matthew stafford like the commercial transport of the Los Angeles Rams, so far no one bites.
Being the only serious contender (potentially with the Chicago Bears?), The Colts could very well “corner the market” here. Managing Director of Colts Chris Ballard is notoriously cautious about separating draft picks (opting to hoard them instead) and has previously commented that he won’t go into “ desperation mode ” for a starting quarterback this offseason:
“There is a fine line between being aggressive and desperate. We are not going to operate in a desperate world ”, Colts general manager Chris Ballard said on 107.5 The Fan’s ‘The Dan Dakich Show’ last Friday. “That’s what the world does. This is what Twitter does. This is what people do. They operate in a desperate world. No, we are not going to operate in this world.
“We will be aggressive when we have to be aggressive.”
As noted, that doesn’t mean Wentz won’t ultimately become a Colt, but it will be much more on Indianapolis’ own terms than the ridiculous asking price that is currently rumored in the league.
At this point, the Eagles will either have to awkwardly keep Wentz with a lot of money owed to him –including a $ 10m roster bonus due on the 3rd day of the league’s new year, when neither party wants to continue the difficult relationship any longer – or Philly may simply have to give in to the Colts’ more frugal trade offer to finally move on.
It’s a competitive tug of war game, but the Colts currently have all the leverage.
