A range of special black PlayStation 5 consoles are now canceled, with most buyers receiving a full refund through PayPal, after retailer SUP3R5 received “credible threats,” according to TechRadar.
“Last night our team started receiving credible threats to their security,” SUP3R5 tweeted before disabling its Twitter account. “We take these threats seriously. We are unwilling to risk the safety and well-being of our team, or the potential impact this would have on your order.”
SUP3R5 did not specify the said threats, nor why they were sufficient to force a cancellation.
“All existing orders will be canceled and fully refunded in the coming days,” continued SUP3R5. “We wanted this to be a fun way to celebrate a shared nostalgia. In fact, there are people who are willing to interfere with this.”
As noted, some users have started to receive full refunds while others are still waiting. Some seek to delete their payment information of the SUP3R5 site, but cannot do so.
SUP3R5 was trying to fill a niche. Some PlayStation 5 owners lamented Sony’s color choice when the system debuted. After a line of black consoles, Sony decided to go white. Buyers lamented the fact that there was no black alternative to “match” the other consoles in their collection.
SUP3R5 saw an opening in the market for a classic black PlayStation 5 with colors like the PlayStation 2. The “Retro Inspired PlayStation 5 Console” was pre-ordered for around $ 649, limited to 304 units. The drop sold out quickly, with a spring release expected.
The buying process itself, however, was fraught with pitfalls. Inventory issues have kept buyers from locking down their systems. Others have not received any confirmation of their purchases. Abandoned shoppers are still reporting issues as SUP3R5 appears to be declining its online presence.
It’s unclear if this particular line will return, or if SUP3R5 is done with the PS5 for good. “If we decide it’s safe to try again, we will,” SUP3R5 wrote in a now-deleted statement. The company did not respond to requests for comment.
