Recently, Sixers head coach Doc Rivers Rich iron show for an interview. Rivers was asked what some of the factors led to his decision to join the franchise during the offseason. He went on to quote his close relationship with 76ers president Daryl Morey and later said this to further develop his statement:
“Daryl has had several trades so far that I’ve said, ‘No I don’t want to do that,’ and he’s moving on. This is the kind of relationship you need to have when you have a coach and direction, I think it works that way.
Some of the former Sixers front offices, led by figures like Brian Colangelo or Elton Brand, had made their belief in collaboration very clear, and not just one person had made a final call. While it seems positive in nature, the whole ideal of collaboration has been tied to the Sixers having made a lot of missteps in the past.
An example of past collaborative efforts that have failed can be found with former Sixers vice president of player staff Marc Eversley. Eversley would have been a huge voice / factor in the room for past decisions such as drafting Markelle Fultz or signing Al Horford – two moves which are now viewed with regret.
The Sixers now have a completely redesigned front office, led by a talented basketball spirit in Daryl Morey. While things have definitely changed since some of those decisions, it’s a bit of a surprise to see the Sixers return so quickly to an openly collaborative effort.
It’s also worth noting how much Doc Rivers publicly praised the duo of Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid. Rivers has alluded to the training of the two All-Stars on several occasions since moving to Philly. The weight that Doc Rivers carries in the Sixers front office could make or break the Sixers by making a drastic decision to sound.
This quote officially confirms that we can restart commercial machines again at will. It’s no wonder that Daryl Morey shopped the NBA landscape to improve his roster; he’s made countless moves since becoming a basketball executive in the early 2010s. The main question that remains to be answered would probably be what kind of move is he considering? Are we ready for a successful deal possibly involving someone like Bradley Beal? Is it a subtle move to land the Sixers with a quality role player like PJ Tucker? It remains to be seen.
Based on the sounds of it, it’s very likely that the current Sixers won’t end this season as planned just yet. The list features plenty of holes, such as their perimeter defense, and lacks a high quality capable of shooting, among other factors. The NBA trade deadline is only March 25, so we’ll see what Daryl Morey has up his sleeve in the months to come.
