Another year, another report says the Jaguars could fire coach Doug Marrone.
Last year ESPN reported on the Saturday before the regular season finale that Marrone was told he would be fired after the Week 17 game. This year NFL Media is going for the much safer suggestion than the Jaguars. “Should” return Marrone.
The Jaguars are the worst football team. They have already fired general manager Dave Caldwell. Of course, they should fire Marrone.
Here’s where it gets a little more interesting. NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reports that if Marrone is indeed sacked, the team could sue former Florida and Ohio State coach Urban Meyer, whose name emerged last Sunday as a potential alternative to the NFL.
“The team has shown interest in former Florida and Ohio State coach Urban Meyer, who has fielded a staff and told those close to the football community that he matters land in Jacksonville, sources said, “wrote Rapoport.
That’s a somewhat surprising suggestion, since the idea that the Jaguars have led Meyer to believe the job is his if he wants it to upset Rooney’s rule at a time when the NFL seems more determined than ever to s ” ensure that teams engage in diverse, inclusive and deliberate research.
Hiring Meyer would also raise the question of whether Meyer would consider selecting Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields over Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence with the first draft pick or, potentially, a switches into a trade with the Jets, allowing New York to take Lawrence and then selecting Champs.
Either way, the first step will be deciding Doug Marrone’s future. As we learned last year, it wasn’t released until it was released. Once released, things could get interesting in Jacksonville.
