Report: Jay Rodgers to leave for role with Los Angeles Chargers

This is definitely not the news we wanted to hear in Chicago …

The Chicago Tribune’s Brad Biggs said the Bears are set to lose defensive line coach Jay Rodgers to the Los Angeles Chargers.

His new role has yet to be confirmed, but in all likelihood he will be the Chargers’ new defensive coordinator. Jay Rodgers was an internal candidate for the Bears with the same vacant position. Now he’s reunited with former OLB Bears coach Brandon Staley as they look to use their hammer named Joey Bosa to destroy QBs across the AFC.

To say “this is a big loss” in itself is an understatement.

He is one of the best coaches in his position group in the NFL, by a considerable margin. In Chicago alone, we’ve seen his incredible work touch every level of the depth map. From big stars to Akiem Hicks and Eddie Goldman, to emerging posts of Bilal Nichols and Roy Robertson-Harris, even the spinning guys found on the streets performed well when called up.

Originally arriving at the Chicago Bears with Vic Fangio and John Fox in 2015, we saw a good consistency in effort, production and discipline of the spreads. He also has a coaching background with quarterbacks and has long been groomed for a DC job. Whoever gets hired as the Bears’ new D-line coach will have some great shoes to fill.

Meanwhile, Sean Desai appears to be the only internal candidate at Halas Hall, with no recent mention of Mark DeLeone or Ted Monachino getting the nod. Combined with the growing roster of external candidates – Jonathan Gannon, George Edwards, James Bettcher, and Mike Singletary have all been interviewed for the DC job – and this suggests we may be hiring someone from the outside as the new Big Boss. of the defense.

Stay tuned….
