It’s no surprise, but the Jets will fire head coach Adam Gase after Sunday’s game against the Patriots according to Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero.
Gase is 9-22 in his two years as the Jets head coach. The team have been largely uncompetitive during their tenure, starting 1-7 in 2019 and 0-13 in 2020. Most notably, quarterback Sam Darnold has turned into a bust. Gase was hired specifically because he sold the property on his ability to turn Darnold into a star.
The report lists several of the usual suspects as potential candidates for opening.
Among the candidates that should be considered are Chefs offensive coordinator Eric Bienemy, Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, Ravens defensive coordinator Don “Wink” Martindale, Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith and Rams defensive coordinator Brandon Staley to college coaches such as State of IowaMatt Campbell, Jim Harbaugh of Michigan and Dan Mullen of Florida to all the rest.
Gase’s performance shouldn’t be a bit of an embarrassment for owner Christopher Johnson who gambled his reputation on renting and insisted that Gase would eventually benefit the Jets. The Jets must now turn the page and begin to recover from this failed tenure.
