Each team has changes after the end of the season. In Philadelphia, many changes are possible. A change that will be final, at least apparently, will occur at the level of the defensive coordinator.
Jim Schwartz will leave the team when his contract expires following Sunday’s game, according to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero.
Schwartz, 54, plans to take a year off, during which he will consider retiring. According to the report, the Eagles previously offered Schwartz an extension, and Schwartz “is still very much appreciated by the team.
While that may be quite true, the fact that the NFL is teeming with realities that do not meet invites speculation that there is more to this story. Did the proposed extension amount to an offer the Eagles knew Schwartz would not accept? Is Schwartz shy about his future in case the phone doesn’t ring during the upcoming coaching carousel? Is he just trying to sell himself by creating a feeling of scarcity.
Schwartz, the former Lions head coach (29-51 in five seasons), was the Bills’ defensive coordinator in 2014, left football in 2015 and joined the Eagles in 2016. Despite a solid job with the defense of Philadelphia, Schwartz received less interest in a second head coaching opportunity than his performance would suggest.
Could this all be a little media manipulation aimed at creating a demand for Schwartz’s services and / or toning down the look the Eagles wanted to go through? Considering that it lands at a time in the calendar when attempts to manipulate the media are rampant, it would be foolish to rule that out.
