Report: Lions to hire Anthony Lynn as OC

Discussing the Detroit Lions coaching hires isn’t exactly what we’re doing here. But this one deserves to be noted. The Lions are expected to hire Anthony Lynn as their next offensive coordinator. It’s notable because Pittsburgh Steelers WR coach Ike Hilliard was interviewed for the job.

Lynn was most recently the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers, but was fired after a disappointing 2020 that saw several late-game blunders.

Hilliard has never been considered a favorite for Lions work. But he had a relationship with new head coach Dan Campbell. Both played with the New York Giants in the late 90s and early 2000s. Hilliard has earned a reputation for developing young wide receivers, whether it be Terry McLaurin in Washington or Chase Claypool in Pittsburgh. The Steelers hired Hilliard to be their WR coach ahead of the 2020 season. Now he looks set to stick around for another year.

QB coach Matt Canada and DB coach Teryl Austin were also interviewed for coordinator positions in the league. Canada with the Dolphins, Austin with the Titans. Neither team has yet held these positions. Canada would still be the favorites to replace Randy Fichtner.
