Maryland alleged Michigan men’s basketball head coach Juwan Howard threatened to kill Terrapins head coach Mark Turgeon during their verbal altercation in the Big Ten tournament clash of Friday.
The Terrapins told the Big Ten that Howard yelled, “I’m going to kill you,” when the two coaches were yelling at each other, for Jeff Ermann by 247Sports. Howard was kicked out of Michigan’s 79-66 win for the incident.
“It’s been going on for three games,” said Turgeon. “I’ve been doing this for 34 years and called the conference office. I called the commissioner to find out what happened in the first two games. And I said I wasn’t going to participate. in the third game. And so I got up. For my team, I got up for myself. “
Ermann noted that Maryland had complained that Howard made disrespectful comments towards the team bench during their regular season meetings. The Terps also said rookie Hunter Dickinson made fun of their bench.
Howard explained to journalists what happened from his point of view:
“(Mark) Turgeon saw I was out of the box, he told the ref to look at my feet, I’m out of the box, I’m like, come on man, that’s what we’re doing today ‘ hui? Are you afraid my feet are out of the box? So he said, “Juwan, I’m not going to let you talk to me. You never speak to me again. ”And he instructed me.
“I don’t know how you were raised, but how I was raised by my grandmother and also by Chicago. I was raised by Chicago, I grew up on the South Side, when the guys load you up. , it’s time to stand up for yourself. “
Assistant Phil Martelli, former head coach of Saint Joseph, took over from the Wolverines after Howard was sent off.
Michigan will face rival Ohio State in the first semi-final of the Big Ten tournament on Saturday. He’ll likely win a No.1 seed in the Big Dance regardless of his fate against the Buckeyes, whom he beat in their only regular-season game.
