MIAMI – Caron Butler returns to the Miami Heat, agreeing to start his coaching career as Erik Spoelstra’s personal assistant, a source told The Associated Press on Friday.
Butler and The Heat are in the process of finalizing their contract, the source said.
Butler was the Heat’s 10th pick in the 2002 NBA Draft and spent two seasons with the team, traveling to the Los Angeles Lakers in 2004 as part of the deal that brought Shaquille O’Neal to Miami. He takes the opening on the staff that was released by Dan Craig, a longtime Heat assistant who was hired earlier this offseason by the LA Clippers.
Butler, 40, played for nine teams in 14 NBA seasons, was a two-time All-Star and was part of the 2011 Dallas Mavericks team that dominated Miami for the NBA title.
Even though he only spent two years with the Heat, Butler has remained close to many in the organization and invited a large contingent of Heat to his wedding several years ago. He has worked as a TV analyst for the NBA and varsity games since his retirement in 2018 and recently hosted an NBA series titled “1 on 1 with Caron Butler” – a number of interviews to discuss the need for social justice .
Hiring Butler means the Heat’s three frontline assistants will be former Miami players; he will join Chris Quinn and Malik Allen in this capacity.
