Report: Michigan plans to hire Florida linebacker coach

As Jim Harbaugh waits until the Baltimore Ravens’ playoffs are over in the NFL, he’s taking action to help his new defensive coordinator.

Michigan intends to hire Florida linebacker coach Christian Robinson, according to reports Friday afternoon in Gainesville.

Robinson, 30, has spent the last three seasons coaching Dan Mullen’s linebackers. He helped develop NFL draft picks Vosean Joseph (fifth round, Buffalo Bills) and Jonathan Greenard (third round, Houston TX), while the Gators produced a top 10 defense nationally. in 2019.

Robinson’s place on the staff is unclear. Harbaugh sacked defensive coordinator Don Brown on Dec. 22 and allowed the contracts of defensive line coach Shaun Nua and cornerback coach Mike Zordich to expire, opening the door to a staff disruption.

According to 247Sports, Michigan will be responsible for paying a buyout equal to 25% ($ 75,000) of Robinson’s $ 300,000 salary if he takes on a non-coordinating role outside of the SEC. If he takes on a coordinator role, the buyout rises to 50 percent ($ 150,000).

Florida have already parted ways with cornerback coach Torian Gray and safety coach Ron English.

Prior to his stint in Florida, Robinson was a graduate assistant under Mullen at Mississippi State in 2017, a graduate assistant at Ole Miss in 2015 and 2016, and perhaps most notably, a graduate assistant in Georgia in 2013 and 2014.

Why is this last part remarkable? Because Robinson’s time in Georgia overlapped that of Mike Macdonald, the Ravens linebacker coach who would have been appointed to be Michigan’s new defensive coordinator. Both were graduate assistants on the defensive side in 2013, before Macdonald interned in the NFL and moved to Baltimore.

Speaking at the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association’s annual clinic Friday morning, Harbaugh confirmed the addition of running backs coach Mike Hart and said a defensive coaching staff would be in place “very soon ”.

“I can’t make any announcements yet, until things are signed,” Harbaugh said. “But I’m very close to doing all of these moves.”

A native of Norcross, Ga., Robinson played linebacker for four seasons in Georgia from 2009-2012 under current Florida defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, totaling 159 tackles (22 1/2 for loss) and 4-1. / 2 bags. He briefly pursued a career in the NFL, without being drafted, before becoming a coach.
