It looks like Cam Newton’s New England experience will be one and over.
ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter reported on NFL Countdown Sunday that the Patriots and 2015 NFL MVP are should go this offseason.
Newton will become a free agent, and he will be available to go wherever he wants. It was in the same boat a year ago, but it came to the market late when the Panthers delayed its release until after exploring all trading options. The health issue also made the teams suspicious, combined with the inability of the teams to fully and completely assess his foot, ankle and shoulder.
This year he has a chance in the open market – but there are real questions about his current skills and abilities. He has five touchdown passes this season. During his MVP campaign, he threw five touchdown passes in three different games.
For the Patriots, that means finding another starting quarterback. Whether it’s Jarrett Stidham or a veteran or a rookie remains to be seen.
Newton will come out with $ 3.7 million for a season of work. It’s nowhere near market value, but it was the best deal he could find last year. This time around he will have a better chance of getting a much better deal.
