Just days after their first big personal transfer of the offseason – reacquisition of offensive tackle Trent Brown via the Las Vegas Raiders trade – the New England Patriots made their second: the team returned starting quarterback Cam Newton to a hefty one-year $ 5 million incentive-contract to keep him from hitting unrestricted free agency next week.
While it remains to be seen how Newton will fit into the picture this season and what additional moves will be made in the post, it’s no secret that the team will continue to stay vigilant and add talent to the team. a quarterback room also made up of Jarrett Stidham and Jake Dolegala. What will this talent look like? That is the big question, but New England is exploring all possible avenues.
One of the San Francisco 49ers apparently also involved, starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. According to Evan Lazar of CLNS Media, the Patriots “kicked the tires” on their former second-round draft pick before finally bringing Newton back into the fold.
A move never materialized, however, because the 49ers kept saying Garoppolo would not be available commercially. While things can change quickly in the NFL this time of year, the Patriots have taken a different direction to bring Newton back into the fold.
Of course, New England inquiring into Garoppolo’s availability and re-signing their 2020 starting quarterback doesn’t necessarily have to be logged on. The Patriots will be doing their due diligence on a lot of players to get a feel for the market, and the San Francisco QB was probably no exception despite his ties to the organization.
At this point, and even if Newton stays put, New England has a big presence in the quarterback market – whether Garoppolo is also a part of it or not.
