In theory, with so much money coming from the Rockies, you’d assume they’re actually getting a good comeback from the Cardinals for a star player. But, since they’re the Cardinals, I’m going to assume they give up very little what they’re going to miss, and now Arenado will become an absolute superstar for the next six seasons in St. Louis. This suuuuuucks.
Rosenthal suggests the comeback could include a combination of LHP Austin Gomber, 1B Luken Baker, OF Jhon Torres, RHP Jake Woodford and / or RHP Angel Rondón. I barely recognize these names, so it’s not a good sign.
The Rockies really, really wanted to give Arenado. I mean, they would also contribute $ 50 million.

The Cardinals are now “pushing hard” for Nolan Arenado, and they are “very determined”:

Plus, Cardinals president John Mozeliak was asked about Arenado today, and while he doesn’t address a player from another team by name, man, the things he has said seemed all kinds of mistrust.

It’s hardly an attempt to crush this one, or even stay neutral. To me that sounds like a guy who leads deep and complex business negotiations. He knows that might not work, because making a deal with so many layers is really hard. But yes, this is clearly discussed very seriously.
And as Heyman hears it, the Cardinals really want that to happen. Financially, the Cardinals can probably swing it as long as they don’t have to shoulder the full six years and $ 199 million of the Arenado contract (especially in 2021 – maybe that’s where they send the Carpenter’s contract). And if Arenado still wants to come out as badly as it looked last year, then he will find a way to move that withdrawal.
