Report: Ted Monachino doesn’t return to bears in 2021

The entire Chicago Bears defensive staff could face a complete overhaul after all.

First, Chuck Pagano retired as the Bears’ defensive coordinator days after their elimination in the playoffs. Later, defensive line coach Jay Rodgers reportedly quit for a job with the Los Angeles Chargers. More recently, after extensive research, the Bears promoted safety coach Sean Desai to defensive coordinator.

Now the Bears will be looking for a new outside linebacker coach. According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, Ted Monachino will not be returning for the next 2021 season.

Ted – no, not THAT Ted – was brought in by Chuck Pagano to fill the role of outside linebacker coach after Brandon Staley’s departure in 2019. Prior to that, Ted had served as DC for Chuck with the Indianapolis Colts. Since 2019 he has coached a group that featured Khalil Mack; Robert Quinn (who was a disappointment); Leonard Floyd; and a rejuvenated Barkevious Mingo.

Sean Desai and Head Coach Matt Nagy now have vacancies in the following positions:

  1. Defensive line
  2. Collateral (thanks to the promotion of Desai)
  3. Outside linebackers

It is currently unclear why Monachino was not selected at this time. I admit that the overall production versus the money invested in his group of posts has … not been ideal. Only Khalil Mack, and occasionally other rotating players, provided a quick form of passing from the rim. So a change here may be performance related.

It is also unclear at this time who will be targeted for this position. However, Brad Biggs mentioned analyst Bill Shuey as an internal candidate. We’ll all let you know who the guy is once he finds one … or if this whole plan is turned upside down.
