Ford's popular 5.0-liter Coyote V8 engine may not be in the next-generation F-150 lineup.
The company's turbocharged EcoBoost engines are now the most popular choice among F-150 buyers. The 5.0-liter V8 has been replaced by more powerful turbocharged 3.5-liter plants of recent generations.
Recognizing that some buyers still prefer a naturally aspirated eight-cylinder engine, Ford plans to replace the 5.0-liter V8 with a more powerful 4.8-liter engine while the F-150 enters its 14th generation, according to Ford Authority.
To be more competitive with the V6 turbo options, the 4.8-liter V8 would offer 420 horsepower and 420 pounds of torque, a modest increase of 25 ponies and 20 pounds. Fuel consumption will likely improve slightly compared to the 5.0-liter plant, which offers a combined power of 17 mpg and a highway speed of 20 mpg.
The next-generation F-150 could be ready by the end of next year for the 2021 model year. According to previous rumors, the move to the 4.8-liter V8 would affect other brands, including including the Mustang.
