Representative Ilhan Omar has reported increasing death threats since Trump shared the September 11 video

Ilhan Omar (D-Min.) Said in a statement Sunday night that the death threats against him have increased since Trump tweeted a video presenting his comments on the attacks of September 11, 2001.

President Donald Trump on Friday shared an incendiary video on Twitter cutting to quote Omar. "some people did something" juxtaposed with images and audio of terrorist attacks.

Omar's statement comes out of a speech she made last month at an event organized by the Council on American-Islamic Relations, in which she declared that Muslims felt vilified after the attacks of September 11: "We have lived too long with the discomfort of being a second class citizen and, frankly, I'm fed up, and every Muslim in this country should be fed up "said Omar.

"CAIR was founded after September 11, because they recognized that some people had done something and we were all starting to lose access to our civil liberties." Omar's office told the Washington Post that the first-year legislator had misrepresented – CAIR was founded in 1994 and doubled in size after the Sept. 11 attacks.

The video Trump uploaded was retweeted more than 90,000 times Sunday night.

In a statement, Omar's office said the legislator had received an increase in death threats directly related to the video.

"Since the president's tweet Friday evening, the direct threats to my life have increased – many referring directly to the president's video or responding to it." I thank the Capitol Police, the FBI, the Sergeant-at-Arms , and the Speaker of the House for their attention to these threats. "

"The violent rhetoric of hate speech has no place in our society, let alone the commander-in-chief of our country," she added.

Earlier Sunday, Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi called for strengthening Omar's security following the Trump video.

"The president's words weigh a ton, and his hateful and incendiary rhetoric creates a real danger: President Trump must record his disrespectful and dangerous video," she said in a statement, adding that the Capitol police were a security investigation to protect Omar.

Critics have warned that Trump's video may intensify calls for violence against Omar, who has already faced death threats. Last week, a New York man was charged with death threats over the phone at Omar's office.
