Republican Senator Sasse slams Nebraska GOP for “strange worship” of Trump after state party reprimand

On Saturday, the Nebraska Republican Party officially “berated” Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) For his vote to impeach former President Trump earlier this year, though he stopped before formal censorship, reports CNN.

Why is this important: Sasse is the latest in a list of Republicans who suffered some sort of punishment from their state apparatus after voting to impeach the former president. The senator responded to the statement on Saturday, according to the Omaha World-Herald, saying that “most Nebraskans don’t think politics should be some guy’s weird worship.”

The bottom line: “Senator Sasse’s condemnation of President Trump and his support for the impeachment of President Trump has been generously used on several occasions by Democrats as justification for a truncated impeachment process that has negated the President’s due process,” said the resolution, according to CNN.

  • The party expressed “deep disappointment and sadness at the service of Senator Ben Sasse and calls for an immediate readjustment whereby he represents the people of Nebraska in Washington and not Washington to the people of Nebraska.”

Sasse was first reprimanded by the party in 2016, but was reelected last fall with 63% of the vote, about 5 points more than Trump won in Nebraska.
