Six men entered the cave on Friday around 19 hours. and planned to spend more time exploring it, he said.

One of these men left the cave on Sunday morning around 2 am He told the authorities that the others were having trouble getting out, Chrimes said Sunday.

The man who escaped said that the other men were exhausted and were starting to have hypothermia problems, according to Chrimes. Men are not lost and are not too far in the cave.

The cave explorers did not have a lot of food or water in excess, and Chrimes said the underground temperature was in the 50s. Although this is comfortable under normal circumstances, it can cause hypothermia problems when you are not active and moving.

The five men still in the cave are between 34 and 59 years old. The one who escaped early Sunday morning was 22, according to Russell County Emergency Management Coordinator Jess Powers.

Powers said the group planned to camp in the cave until Sunday, but a heavy downpour Saturday night made the conditions muddy and wet and probably contributed to their difficulties.

The rescue will take hours

Chrimes said that the rescue effort would probably take a long time due to the small size of the cave. In addition, rescue teams will have to go inside, assess the situation and report, as mobile phones and radios do not work inside the cave.

An extensive network of cave rescue teams has been set up, as well as other teams on the east coast that have been put on hold in case further assistance is needed, said Chrimes.

"With cave rescue incidents, this could potentially take anywhere from eight to twelve hours, depending on the effort to get the subjects out, and even beyond, depending on the circumstances," said Chrimes.

"We certainly hope for the best and be able to warm them up, get them moving, give them energy and get them out on their own, but we are still waiting to see what that will entail. "

Tony Smith, who owns a ranch next to the caves, told CNN affiliate WJHL that five large caves are spreading about fifteen kilometers underground.

The cave where men are trapped is known as the "cyclops cave" and is popular with explorers, although it is on private property. The cave has a "bubble-shaped" inside known as the "eye" of the Cyclops, in which the group planned to camp, said Powers.
