Research, analysis and analysis of the salary cap of the agreements of Lonzo Ball, DeMar Derozan and Alex Caruso – The Athletic

Below is a conversation about the moves the Chicago Bulls have made in free agency so far between The Athletic’s Seth Partnow (analytical), Sam Vecenie (recount / scout) and Danny Leroux (CBA).

Terms

Chicago Bulls acquire Lonzo Ball through signing and trading the New Orleans Pelicans for Tomas Satoransky, Garrett Temple and a second round pick. Ball signs a four-year, $ 85 million contract.

Bulls sign Alex Caruso on four-year, $ 37 million contract.

Bulls acquire DeMar DeRozan through signing and trading the San Antonio Spurs for Thaddeus Young, Al-Farouq Aminu, a future first-round pick and two future second-round picks. DeRozan signs a three-year, $ 85 million contract.

Initial reaction

Seth Partnow: We had our discussion of the Bulls’ moves mostly written after the acquisitions of Ball and Caruso. The consensus was pretty much all positive and then OH NO WHAT JUST HAPPENED!?!

What was a very productive and sensible offseason took a sudden turn with what is, to me, a flagrant overpayment for DeRozan in terms of both assets sent to Spurs as well as the contract awarded to a player who seemed on track to perhaps sign some mid-level agreement with a competitor.
