Residents of Detroit and Grosse Pointe hit by new flooding and damage to basements

DETROIT – Communities, including parts of the east side of Detroit and Grosse Pointe, were hit hard by flooding three weeks ago.

And on Friday, residents faced yet another flooding of their basements.

Wesley Burns lives in the Jefferson-Chalmers neighborhood. Unfortunately, this is not the first time he has encountered water in his basement.

“All I know is that in the last four or five years we’ve been inundated,” Burns said.

Burns said he had just recovered from the last flooding three weeks ago and that water is again in his basement after heavy rains on Friday.

“It’s mounted halfway to my water tank and is 6 feet tall,” Burns said.

Her daughter, Cynthia Burns, said it was upsetting.

“It’s just a puzzle since the great flood. My dad has a fixed income, so we have to replace two water heaters, a furnace, a washer, a dryer and a freezer, ”said Cynthia Burns.

Ron Porter hired a cleaning crew to clean his basement from the last flood on Friday morning.

“Then I went down to the basement around 11:30 am and water was bubbling in my drain and laundry room,” Porter said. “It’s a regional problem and we need to have a regional solution to our infrastructure. “
