Return 4 Blood Devs ‘discussing’ how to make single player more rewarding

Turtle Rock Studios, the developer behind Back 4 Blood, has acknowledged the community’s frustration with the game’s lack of progression in single-player mode and is looking for ways to make it more rewarding.

As spotted by Eurogamer, the developer thanked fans on Twitter for their comments on the single-player mode before explaining that he is considering different ways to address community concerns.

“We have heard your frustrations with the single player progression and are discussing ways to resolve the issue,” Turtle Rock Studios said. “Thank you for your patience and feedback at this time – we’ll have more news as we strategize on potential ways to achieve this.”

Complaints about Back 4 Blood’s single player mode were illustrated in a discussion thread on the game’s Reddit page. Those who are not happy with the mode have expressed their reactions to a message that appears on screen when they choose to play the Back 4 Blood single player campaign. The post, which can be seen in the post below, reads as follows:

“Uses the single player decks created in the Fort Hope deck menu. Maps and objectives will be adjusted. Matchmaking and player invites are disabled. Earning supply points is disabled. Stats tracking is disabled. Progress progression is disabled. to accomplishments is disabled. “

In Back 4 Blood, a player’s character can be adapted to different styles of play. This element of the game uses a card-based system that allows you to change your character’s basic stats and abilities during each act of the game. Between games, players can purchase additional cards to add to their deck using Supply Points (an in-game currency with which players are rewarded for completing in-game missions).

In single-player mode, however, players cannot earn supply points and instead use single-player decks. This means that throughout the single player campaign, players have access to all cards in the game and can build a deck without having to spend Supply Points.

Since players don’t need Supply Points for the single-player campaign, it can be reasonable to assume that they wouldn’t need them either. However, many fans believe that this is not the case and that disabling Supply Points completely undermines the basic progression element of Back 4 Blood’s gameplay.

“I was REALLY looking forward to playing this solo,” said Reddit user xslimz. “But the lack of progression is really killing him. I understand it can be weird to unlock MP stuff playing SP with bots, but they could at least cut it down to 25% rewards or something.”

“I understand they want you to play multiplayer because it’s a team game,” added another user in a separate post. “But no rewards or achievements? It’s really disappointing that you have to play with other people if you really want to improve.”

For community members, part of that frustration comes from the belief that the decision to turn off supply points in the single-player campaign was not made in the best interests of the game’s main fan base, but rather to limit those who could exploit the game’s single player campaign by cultivating points that they could then spend in other game modes. “We wouldn’t want someone to bot the SP for supply points now.” said one user in the thread, while another added, “People are going to cheat one way or another. Doing that only drives more people crazy.”
