An Iranian mole was responsible for the introduction of the Stuxnet virus on the computers of an Iranian uranium enrichment plant, Yahoo News reported Monday.

According to the report, malicious software would have been installed in the Natanz plant in 2007, shortly after the installation of advanced centrifuges.

The Dutch intelligence agency AIVD, acting at the request of the CIA and Mossad, recruited an Iranian engineer who was working at the factory. The engineer served as a mole to the intelligence agency and managed to transmit the Stuxnet virus via a USB key.

The joint operation called the Olympics and was intended to delay the Iranian nuclear program. The Stuxnet virus has reportedly destroyed up to 1,000 centrifuges at the Natanz plant.

The virus was discovered in 2010.
