Dark Phoenix is the seventh X-Men movie of the X-Men franchise. If you count the three Wolverine movies and the two Deadpool movies, there are technically twelve. For the most part, these films have been risky. As popular as many of these characters are, these movies have not really been memorable and do not share the love that viewers have for MCU movies. Does this latest film change things? Read and see.

You have to give credit to the X-Men movie franchise for one thing. Warner Brother's "Batman And Robin" was a disaster and so much so that he killed the kind of superhero movie for about 13 years. In 2000, Fox released the first X-Men movie. It was not great, but it was not Batman and Robin either. X-Men has also introduced the character of the film Wolverine in the world of cinema. Hugh Jackman, the newcomer, has incarnated him. The whole world fell in love with this character and Jackman quickly became a household name. This film helped revive the movie genre of superheroes and was closely followed by other superhero movies such as Sony's "Spider-Man", "Hulk" from Universal and "Iron Man" from Paramount. In the end, all this led Disney to acquire Marvel and slowly but surely recover the movie rights of some of his most popular Marvel characters for his Marvel film universe.

Surprisingly, this movie is not as bad as most critics claim to be. Of course it's a problem, but it also helps to do a lot of things. In my opinion, this movie is much better than X-Men: The Last Fight and X-Men: Apocalypse. It's nowhere as good as X2: X-Men United or Logan, but it's sort of in the middle of the pack. What they really get in this movie is the X-Men themselves. It's more like X-Men comics than any other X-Men movie. And you must love those blue and yellow costumes that comic fans are dying to see since the days of X-Men dressed in black leather in all these previous movies. In my book, the first half hour is really great, as the X-men save astronauts from a space shuttle mission in danger. This shows that X-Men work together as a team and use the best of their powers. Again, it looks like something coming out of the X-Men comics.

I think Sophie Turner does a great job as Jean Gray. I've never been a fan of Famke Janssen in the original X-Men films, and for me, Turner is the perfect embodiment of the character. I've also loved James McAvoy in the role of Charles Xavier in this series. Once again, I prefer McAvoy to Patrick Stewart, and for me it's his best performance, or the most accurate of his comic book performances. Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Alexandra Shipp as Storm, Kodi Smit-McPhee as Nightcrawler and Evan Peters as Quicksilver also have great performances and are all as realistic as you want.

My problem with this group of X-Men is how they always seem to elevate the Mystic character in these movies, which is played by Jenifer Lawrence. And I do not care if Lawrence won one or two Oscars, she does not add anything to these films, nor her character. Lawrence's dominance in these films is probably due to his Oscar-winning celebrity status and, for some reason, Fox must have the feeling that it attracts moviegoers a great deal. It's a bit like Leonardo DiCaprio was playing Egghead in a Batman movie before getting fat, and then every Batman movie after that made DiCaprio take over as Egghead. In the X-Men comics, Mystique has never been an integral part of the X-Men, nor Quicksilver. I hope that no matter what incarnation we see in the future for the X-Men, this Mystic is nowhere.

The lack of wolverine also hurts this film. You have to face it, Wolverine is the most popular X-Men and his introduction to comics really put the X-Men in the foreground. And as I have already said, Hugh Jackman has always been a great choice. He loves to play the character and did his best to be as faithful as possible by playing the character for millions of comic fans. Nobody wants to see a Wolverine cameo in an X-Men movie. And in this movie, you do not even get a cameo.

The other big problem for me was that of the bad guys in this movie. They were led by Jessica Chastain and it looked like a very generic extraterrestrial invasion story. They could have used the original source material, "The Dark Phoenix Saga", in the comics and integrate The Hellfire Club, but they chose a group of aliens who change their form. Sounds familiar to you, is not it? In addition, some X-Men seem to be making irrational decisions for no reason. A bit like Batman V Superman, where the two heroes wanted to kill each other for not having the best reasons. Superheroes should be a lot smarter than that. But probably the biggest problem is that this movie feels like something is missing. Something on the floor of the cutting room or something that has never been filmed because they lacked funds. It ends abruptly and I felt they could have done something much more spectacular than the end we had. Continue reading.

And oh boy! Are you going to see a lot of similarities with this film and Marvel's "Captain Marvel"? I wonder if this film came out first, if Captain Marvel would have been accused of plagiarism. These two women focus on overwhelmed superheroes with cosmic powers who have to face a group of aliens in changing form. And these two movies take place in the 90s. In fact, Fox had to re-film the end of Dark Phoenix because it looked too much like the end of Captain Marvel. Does the Disney / Fox agreement have anything to do with that? Originally, Dark Phoenix was scheduled to be released on November 2, 2018, and moved to February 14. Its release date was finally postponed to June 7th. It seems fishy.

It is always better to go in these movies with low expectations and be pleasantly surprised. And I'm glad it happened to me. There are a lot of good action and performance scenes, but it could have been better as well. This film is sometimes quite violent and although it is rated PG-13, I do not know if I would like to bring the whole family to this one. It would have been nicer to have a more epic end to the X-Men franchise, but in a way, this somewhat guarantees that this group of X-Men will not be transferred to the MCU. I really hope to see an X-Men team consisting of Jean Gray, Cyclops, Beast, Wolverine, Storm, Gambit and Rogue someday. OK Marvel, let's see what you can do!

I give Dark Phoenix a 6.5 / 10.
