Apple hates wires. Over the years, he has ripped them out of his products. He even launched a frustrating no-jack trend by removing the 3.5mm headphone jack from all his iPhones. With its Beats brand, Apple is expanding the door. The new Powerbeats Pro are made to work and they are fantastic. They will never fall out of your ears, will sound much better than the AirPods and will last almost twice as long with a charge.
Sorta Colorful, comfortable enough
You can see more than ever the influence of Apple in the new Beats headphones (they bought the company in 2014), similar to the Studio3 headphones. New Beats have a more balanced sound, cleaner lines and are nice with the iPhone and Mac. So it's no surprise that the $ 250 Powerbeats Pro looks like a lighter, sleeker version of the Powerbeats3, which we've been recommending since 2016. They cost about $ 50 more, and 17% less, according to Apple.
For now, the many crazy colors of Powerbeats3 are gone. Pro Powerbeats are available in earth tones such as black, navy blue, moss and ivory. Apple sent me a black pair, but the green moss is no longer my style. It is unfortunate that there is no purple, orange or red for people who lead a life more alive than me, but I hope that Apple will soon taste the # 39; rainbow sky.
Beats
The new Powerbeats may not be colorful, but they are comfortable. I do not wear Powerbeats often, so it took me a few days to get used to putting them on (and putting them on). They hang on your ear like glasses and you turn them to lock them in place. The ear horn remains in place, but if you give it strength, it is foldable. You can push it to the exact place you like and it seems to stay, which makes it comfortable for many ear sizes. The default tips worked well for me (my ears are rather "default"), but there are three other sizes big and small.
Each headset is splash and sweat resistant (IPX4). She will not jostle or go out, no matter how hard you work. I can verify it because, at one point, I literally started to whip my head to shake them, in the manner of a backup dancer in this Willow Smith clip.
Each bud also has mirrored controls. The main Beats logo is a button for reading and pausing – hold it down to activate Siri or Google Assistant, depending on your phone – and a useful volume rocker is on top of it. Most wireless headsets have a jumble of confused button combinations so that anything can be done. So it was nice to know how to use powerbeats without having to memorize what three taps mean on the left headset and how it differs from three taps on the right button. (I am a product reviewer and not a master of Morse code.)
The only button that is missing is a power button. Just like the AirPods and all the wireless headphones that surround them, these buttons are slaves to their charging cradle, although they last a lot longer than most competitors.
Beats
These last about nine hours – and I listened to a whole day of music to find out. If you take them out of your ears and drop them on a table, they will go into sleep mode and drain after 30 hours. So, basically, you will have to charge them within one day of withdrawing from their case. Most ear buds last less than five hours outside their case. A nine-hour battery life is incredibly impressive, but I wish I did not need this valve case for many vital functions. I would be happy to disable them without it (impossible) or to initiate the Bluetooth pairing mode without it (also impossible).
It is easy to magnetically snap the ear cups into the casing. Unfortunately, as the loading cradles go, it is stout: 3 inches square and 1.5 inches tall. The space is not wasted. It still takes 18 hours (2 full charges) of battery power, which is great … it just will not fit in your pocket. It's the kind of clamshell case that you'll want to carry in a bag or purse, but you will not want to wear one. It also charges via Apple's iPhone lighting cable, which can be a nuisance for Android users (no wireless charge). Fortunately for Beats, every pair of wireless headphones you can buy depends on the case.
Its balanced, smart calls
The music also sounds much brighter than the AirPods and many truly wireless headphones. (Better than the Galaxy Buds at $ 130 as well.) They are not as heavy in bass as the Beats that I have to listen to, which is nice. Bass still resonates, but not all the sound down. Powerbeats Pro are more balanced. I listened to the new Vampire Weekend album last week and it comes to life as well as on any set of headphones I own. Apple attributes improved sound to new drivers and additional ventilation that dramatically reduces distortion.
Probably thanks to the combination of a built-in sensor and a wireless H1 chip, Beats also solves one of the most frustrating aspects of the association of almost all headsets. listen wirelessly to my phone. He gives up phone calls when I do not wear the buttons. If I get a call while carrying my beats, calls go through them (and sound perfectly). If I remove them from my ears, the call is automatically sent back to the receiver of my phone. It's great and has already saved me a few seconds of awkward silence several times. The sensors also automatically pause your music or podcasts when you remove a Powerbeat signal from your ears.
Beats
There is no active noise cancellation, but you may not need it. The Pro isolate a lot of noise by themselves. So good, in fact, that I missed dinner the other night. After half an hour of blissful melodies, I went out for a cold meal and an annoyed partner. It reminds me … Apple should really add an ambient noise mode that enhances external sounds.
Is it worth it
Fully wireless and wireless headsets continue to evolve as a category and the Powerbeats Pro are an important step in their evolution. These are the best wireless headphones for workouts I've ever used. They stay in place, resist sweat, have incredible sound, have a battery life that's twice as good and work well, whether you're on an iPhone or an Android phone. On top of that, they also intelligently recognize that you are taking them out of your ear and routing calls appropriately. Do not forget that when you look at the price tags, you will find that $ 250, that's about $ 100 more than many competitors. Like all Apple products, convenience comes at a cost for these beats.
