Review of the week – May 6, 2019

[ad_1]

The week in review is a collection of all the goodness I wrote over the past week on the Internet, as well as a small pile of links that I found interesting, usually related to endurance sports. I often wondered what to do with all the freshness that people write, and even if I share it often on Twitter and Facebook is a better forum to send to everyone. Most of the time, these different streams do not overlap, so be on the lookout for all the good stuff at all these places!

So, let's take action!

Messages from DCRAINMAKER.COM last week:

Here are all the benefits found on the main page last week:

Monday: 5 random things that I did this weekend
Tuesday: In-depth study of the Garmin Forerunner 45 / 45S GPS watch
Tuesday: In-depth review of the GPS Garmin Forerunner 245 Music GPS watch
Tuesday: In-depth study of the Garmin Forerunner 945 multisport watch
Wednesday: In-depth review of GPS with ELEMNT ROAM Wahoo bike
Friday: IQ2 Power Meter Changes Direction: Donors Now Receive Pedals
Sunday: Sunday Tidbits: New Vantage V Titan + Roadmap Updates, Suunto Updates and Polar Xert iOS App

Woah then … it was jam-packed!

Sports Tech Deals this week:

Some new (and strong) offers this week:

Garmin Fenix 5 Plus – $ 150 off: Obviously, it's essentially about choosing a FR945 or a Fenix 5 Plus (because the Fenix 5 Plus costs $ 100 less than the FR945). I certainly do not expect a new variant of Fenix anytime soon. [Full In-Depth Review Here]

Apple Watch Series 4 – $ 50 off: This is one of the first times we've seen a sale on the Apple Watch Series 4. While Series 3 sales have been plentiful (often up to $ 199), Series 4 prices have remained at unbeatable prices. Apple generally announces new models in the course of September. I do not expect anything so soon. [Full in-depth review here]

All of these elements also help support the site – enjoy!

YouTube videos of the past week:

Here is what strikes on the You of Tube: do not forget to subscribe to it to be warned videos from the second visit!

Things I found interesting around the interwebs:

Here is an overview of all the random things that I stumbled upon in doing my civic duty to find the end of the Internet (and some of them date back the last two weeks … because my backlog is a a little longer):

1) Surfer retrieves his Apple Watch 6 months after losing it in the ocean: Still worked, and the original owner was found. Although, technically, I understand how this story can certainly be true, a large part of me is quite skeptical.

2) Google Fit comes on Apple Watch and iOS: Now supports tracking activities on the other side of the fence.

3) Virginia Cyclist hit my police car, then a ticket: This story has become a bit viral, and for good reason. Although it seems that the cyclist was mistaken (crossing a street on a red zebra crossing), the policeman was also (avoiding to avoid other objects in a passage for pedestrians turning right in red). I guess it will not be the last time we hear about this story.

4) Confidence vs. skepticism about the performance of East African riders: Always good to read excerpts of Sport Scientists on any subject, and this one is no different.

5) The case of wearing the Pro Team kit: Exactly as the title indicates.

6) A record year for the use of bike lanes in the UK: A case of "if you build it, they will come". (via Race Radio)

7) What is really behind the spin bike backlash: An awesome article from Eben that summarizes some of the problems that I have with the elitist attitude often seen against Peloton / etc, most of them from the cycling community (which then loses 2 to 4 times as much on their own equipment / services). We should not judge people to get and stay in shape. Even though they have to pay $ 250 for shipping.

Sports Technology Software / Firmware Updates this week:

Every week, I quickly highlight some of the new firmware updates, applications, software and websites that I see coming out. If you are a sports technology company and you publish an update, send me a quick note (one line is perfect, or tweet it, it's even better) and I'll do it again. mention here. If I do not know, I will not be able to talk about it. It sounds good? Oh, and if you want to take the lead, this page is a great resource for watching Garmin and some other firmware updates.

(Note: for this week, I went back and included major / notable updates from the last two weeks)

Beta version of the athlete Garmin MARQ firmware: minor bugfixes.

Garmin Fenix 5 Plus Series Firmware Update: Multiple Fixes

Hammerhead Karoo Firmware Update: ability to download maps of countries / regions (compared to small parts), as well as other updates and a patch stack

Polar Vantage Series firmware update: Mainly GPS-based bug fixes, but also helping at altitude on the Vantage M

Suunto Spartan Series Firmware Update: Adds a direction indicator when navigating a route, other updates, and fixes

Wahoo ELEMNT / BOLT firmware update: Stack of bugfixes, including one for SRM based power meters.

Thank you all for reading, enjoy the week ahead!
