Review of Windows Update May 10, 2019: Top 10 New Features

The latest Windows update of May 10, 2019 from Microsoft is made available to existing machines this week. After a long period of testing, Microsoft makes this update available to everyone via Windows Update. Like previous updates, the May 2019 update includes many new features, minor changes, and other changes.

I've recently tested the Windows 10 May 2019 update, and here are my new favorite additions.

The most important visual change brought to Windows 10 in the May 2019 update is a new light theme. This is the default theme of Windows 10 Home, and it is essentially a white version of the black theme currently used by most Windows 10 users. The dark mode of Windows 10 is not always consistent throughout the operating system. quite well executed through the operating system, thanks to many applications and areas using a white background as standard.

Microsoft has also changed the default Windows 10 wallpaper to fit the new theme of light.

Windows 10 includes a new Windows Sandbox feature in the May update. Microsoft is trying to dispel the fear of running an unknown .exe file on your PC by developing a simple way for Windows 10 users to launch applications in an isolated desktop environment. The Windows Sandbox creates a temporary desktop environment to isolate a particular application in this sandbox.

The Windows Sandbox is designed to be secure and disposable. So, once you have run the application you want to test in this mode, the entire sandbox is deleted. You do not need to configure a separate virtual machine as most advanced users do, but your computer will need to support virtualization features (enabled in the BIOS). Microsoft makes Windows Sandbox available as part of Windows 10 Pro or Windows 10 Enterprise because it is aimed at business users and experienced users rather than regular consumers. You will even have to go to "Enable or Disable Windows Features" to enable Windows Sandbox in the first place. If you are using Windows 10 Pro, enable it in case you want to pay close attention to a random .exe file from the Internet.

Microsoft has progressively enabled Windows 10 users to remove more integrated applications that are starting to appear in the operating system. In the May 2019 update, you can now remove apps such as Groove Music, Mail / Calendar, Movies & TV, Calculator, the new Paint 3D app, and the 3D viewer.

You still can not easily remove applications such as Camera or Edge, but with the transition from Microsoft's browser to the Chromium engine, the Edge uninstall option will likely appear in the future.

If you're not a fan of the Cortana Digital Assistant in Windows 10, then the latest Microsoft update from May 2019 offers new options. Microsoft now delineates searches and Cortana on the Windows 10 taskbar, which allows voice requests to be processed separately and then typed into a search box to search for documents and files.

Windows 10 will now lead you to an integrated search experience for text queries, while Cortana will exist for voice queries instead of the two grouped together. The new search interface includes the most used apps, recent activities, and files, with application filtering options, documents, emails, and web results. The search is largely identical, with the exception of looking in all files of a machine.

The search remains globally a bad experience in Windows 10. Microsoft unveiled last year "Microsoft Search", promising that the new service will optimize search results in Office and Windows. Microsoft Search is still in its infancy, but we hope future Windows 10 updates will have more powerful search features, which will allow you to find the file or application you're looking for instead of 39, a random web result.

Microsoft makes the Start menu less cluttered in the latest Windows 10 May 2019 update. Microsoft has reduced the number of applications pinned to the Start menu and groups them differently. This means that all the bloatware and shit that are usually pinned by default are grouped into a single section that you can quickly unpin. Unfortunately, you will only see this new Start menu layout if you create a new user account or use a new Windows 10 PC.

It's the small changes that matter, and a new brightness slider is one of them. Available in the notification center, the slider allows you to quickly adjust the brightness of the screen. It replaces the thumbnail that simply allows you to browse different brightness levels of the screen. If you really want 33% brightness, you can do it now.

Microsoft makes it easy to send kasomoji from a Windows 10 computer to friends or colleagues. Microsoft has added kaomoji characters in the May 2019 update, accessible via the same existing emoji shortcut (win + period). You can choose from a number of kaomoji. In addition, the emoji selector provides quick access to dash and other symbols.

Microsoft improves its support for Windows mixed reality in the May 2019 update. While headphones were previously limited to Steam VR games and universal Windows applications, Microsoft now allows desktop (Win32) applications such as Spotify Visual Studio Code and Photoshop to be launched in the Mixed Reality application.

The new feature is available from all applications in the Pins panel, where is now a Classic Apps (beta) folder that lists desktop applications. This is ideal if you have always dreamed of working fully in virtual reality.

Microsoft has finally listened to users of Windows 10 and added much more control over the triggering of updates with the May 2019 update. All Windows 10 users will now be able to suspend updates, and Microsoft even allows users to choose when to install the latest major version. Windows 10 users can simply stay on an existing version and continue to receive monthly security updates, avoiding the most recent update. This is a big change from what was available before, especially for Windows 10 Home users.

Microsoft is also changing the way it allocates space for Windows updates. Some updates may fail the installation if there is not enough free space. Microsoft therefore reserves about 7 GB of disk space for Windows Update. This should mean that devices with more limited storage still benefit from the latest security and feature updates without issues.

Microsoft aims to reduce our dependence on passwords. One way to do this is to use Microsoft accounts that do not have a password. With the latest update of May 2019, you can now configure and connect to a Windows 10 PC with only a phone number on a Microsoft account.

You can create a Microsoft account without a password by simply entering a phone number as the user name. A code will be sent to your mobile number to allow you to connect. Once Windows 10 is connected, you can use Windows Hello or even a PIN code to connect to your PC without using a password.
