Sony’s first PlayStation 5 hardware review went on sale quietly.

The new version of PlayStation 5 hardware, which was first mentioned via a Japanese product manual last month, went on sale in Australia this week, as Press-Start reported.

The model in question is a Disc Edition console, unlike the digital hardware detailed in last month’s product manual, and has an updated model number.

While the PS5 launch material uses a CFI-1XXX model numbering scheme, the product listed in Sony documentation and on the Australian model spotted this week uses the new CFI-11XX scheme.

Like the hardware review detailed last month, it was confirmed that the updated PS5 has a new screw to secure the console to its bracket, which can now be adjusted by hand instead of requiring a screwdriver.

The new hardware would also weigh less than the launch PlayStation 5 console at 3.6kg, which is 300g lighter than the original hardware. It is not clear if any other changes have been made to the internal hardware.

Sony first indicated earlier this year that it was looking to make small changes to the PlayStation 5 hardware as a potential solution to help it cope with the global hardware component shortage.

Asked about the semiconductor shortage during a call to investors in April, Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki said Sony has the means to manage. “For example, we could maybe find a secondary resource, or by changing the design we could face,” the executive said.

Plans for updated PS5 hardware were then spotted in May, when it emerged that Sony had registered a new wireless communication module that it was apparently applying to the console.

Sony plans to start production of a new PS5 hardware redesign with a “new semi-custom 6nm processor” from AMD in 2022.

The company claimed in May that the standard model of the PS5 will break even from June 2021. “And from that point on, we expect it to gradually become more and more profitable,” the boss said. of PlayStation, Jim Ryan, at an investor relations event.
