Count Rex Ryan among skeptics of Urban Meyer’s success in the NFL.
Ryan had a stern warning for the new Jacksonville Jaguars coach, even hinting at Bobby Petrino as proof of how things can go wrong for successful college coaches at the NFL level. Ryan said, via 247Sports’ Brad Crawford:
“Welcome to the men’s league. You will quickly find that there is a huge difference. Look, there’s no question this man can downright train. But it’s a difference day and night. Why do coaches come into the league and quit after a year, without even making it a full year? I can give you two examples, Lou Holtz and the dude who stopped the Falcons (Bobby Petrino), whatever his name. It’s a different league, it’s a different mindset. There ain’t no freebies here, you can’t plan a win, hey I’m going to go down a level, there’s no I-AA in this league.
Ryan added that Meyer will have to rely on the draft and can’t just recruit all the top talent at the NFL level. He also suggested that Meyer add Raheem Morris to his staff to add some NFL experience. This is something Meyer would examine.
Ryan obviously isn’t the first person to worry about Meyer’s adaptation to the NFL level. That said, his college players have found great success at the NFL level. Meyer certainly has a chance to do that too, but a lot has got to go right.
