Braunwyn Windham-Burke comes out. the Real Housewives of Orange County star revealed in a new interview with GLAAD that she is a lesbian. “It’s something that everyone is familiar with, I think, but I’m ultimately comfortable enough to say it,” she said in a video interview. “It took me 42 years to say it, but I’m so proud of where I am now.” Windham-Burke said she began to realize by talking to a RHOC producer about her relationship with Tamra on the show, ahead of her Season 14 reunion. She started talking to her friends and actors about it over the next year, while continuing her coming-out journey then that she was getting sober, which was a central point of RHOC season 15. “I know there’s a correlation between the two,” added Windham-Burke. “I know when you get sober and you start doing, you know, the work that goes with it, you start to realize that a lot of the reasons you were drinking were about who you were on the inside.
Windham-Burke also said she plans to remain married to her husband Sean for 20 years. They recently renewed their vows on RHOC, and in the new interview, Windham-Burke called him his “best friend.” She had previously spoken of living apart from Sean while they worked to “redefine” their marriage, but said they were living together again. Not only that, but she started dating a woman named Kris, who met Sean and their seven children. “It’s as strange as you do it,” Windham-Burke said.
With her announcement, Windham-Burke becomes the first gay housewife to come out. Last season of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills featured a storyline in which Teddi Mellencamp and Kyle Richards took Denise Richards out on an affair with Brandi Glanville, a former housewife and season guest. Glanville has since become bisexual, while Richards has quit the show. As to whether his sexuality will play out in the current season, Windham-Burke told GLAAD, “This was all happening in my house in real time. It started during the shooting and then after. We raise our fruity virgin drinks to you, Braunwyn!
