Srichand brothers and Gopichand Hinduja have a combined net wealth of £ 22 billion, the Sunday Times estimates

The billionaire Hinduja brothers have been named for the third time among the richest people in the UK, according to the Sunday Times Rich List.

Sri and Gopi Hinduja have seen their fortunes rise by £ 1.356 billion over the last year to £ 22 billion, according to the newspaper.

Meanwhile, the founder of the chemical company, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who figured at the top of the list last year, slipped to third place.

And Valerie Moran becomes the first black woman entrepreneur to list the wealth of the newspaper.

A family business, the Hinduja Group was founded in Mumbai in 1914 and now has interests worldwide, including in the fields of oil and gas, banking, computer and real estate.

British citizens Sri, 83, and Gopi, 79, based in London, are two of the four brothers who control the empire.

Among the properties that they own, there is the Old War Office in Whitehall, which they hope to reopen as a luxury hotel.

The two brothers dominated the list of newspapers in 2014 and 2017.

The list, which assesses the 1,000 richest people in the United Kingdom, relies on an identifiable wealth, including land, property, other assets such as works of art and actions of companies, says the Sunday Times. It does not include the amount contained in people's bank accounts.

The brothers David and Simon Reuben – who made their fortune in real estate, carpets and scrap metal – are in second place on the list, with a combined wealth of 18.664 billion pounds sterling.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, founder of the chemical company Ineos, has seen his net worth fall by 2.9 billion pounds since last year, the newspaper said.

Robert Watts, who compiled this year's list, said: "Clearly, this looks like an exceptional year for the super-rich, with record wealth, more billionaires and an entry level of up to 120 million £.

"But many rich people suffer heavy losses after a year of turbulence in the stock market and political stalemate in Westminster.
