Richard A. Brown, a longtime lawyer in the Queens District, died late Friday.

He was 86 years old.

In January, Brown announced that he would not run again and not retire on June 1, "because of growing health problems associated with Parkinson's disease," according to a statement from Queens Attorney General John Mr. Ryan.

Ryan was sworn in as acting prosecutor on Saturday, sources told ABC News.

Brown was appointed Queens County Attorney in 1991 by then Governor Mario Cuomo, and remained in office for nearly 28 years. He was re-elected for seven terms, according to Ryan's statement.

Brown's office has prosecuted several high-profile cases in New York City, including several police officers who shot Sean Bell, an unarmed black man killed after his bachelor party at a strip club. Queens, which resulted in no conviction.

Recently, his office sued and obtained a conviction against Chanel Lewis for the murder of Karina Vetrano, a 30-year-old woman who was beaten, sexually assaulted and strangled while she was running near her home in Howard Beach, in Queens.

Brown is survived by his wife Rhoda and their three children.

The funeral will be held Tuesday at 11:30 am at the Forest Hills Reformed Temple, located at 71-11th 112th Street in Forest Hills, Queens.
