Richard E. Grant has been in so many notable franchises it’s easy to overlook by making multi-episode appearances on Doctor Who and Game of thrones. But it’s highly unlikely that anyone will forget the Oscar-nominated actor’s turn as classic Loki in Disney +. Loki, from his exquisite costume meant to mimic the Silver Age of comics to his heroic highlight in Episode 5, “Journey Into Mystery”.
As a variant of Loki (Tom hiddleston), Classic Loki is meant to be similar but different from the “mischievous rascal” in key ways, and in a one-on-one interview with Collider, Grant explained how that fact, along with a key element of the script, affected Its performance. He also revealed how he and Hiddleston had talked about working together in the past (in, admittedly, a very different capacity), and his pitch for a Loki spin-off that I think we can all agree on is an instant green light.
Collider: For starters, what does it mean to join the MCU in this capacity? Is this something that you have been looking forward to?
RICHARD E. GRANT: Oh yeah. I had had experience because I was in Logan So about five years ago, so I had a taste of what it was, but Tom Hiddleston said to me, he said, “You know, I think when people see Classic Loki, he there will be a great response. ” I thought he was just blowing smoke on my foundation on day one so I felt better about going into work for an episode, episode 5, after they got it. had been doing for almost a year before. Then I saw my Instagram and Twitter feed and the reviews posted last Wednesday and realized he had seen in the crystal ball in a way that I hadn’t seen. So Tom was right and I sit up happily.
Did they tell you anything about the costume before you signed up?
GRANT: Yes. They sent me the costume design with my face on it. It was the classic Loki from Jack Kirby’s 60s illustrations and it was a fantastic muscle costume. As you can see, I was born without any. When I got to Atlanta and said, “So where’s the muscular suit that I put on before I put on the green tights?” They said, “What muscle combination?” And I said, “Well, like the drawings.” They said, “No. We don’t have one for you. And I said, “Well, I don’t have any muscles to fill it in.” And they said, “Ah, don’t worry about that. And I said, “I’m worried about that.” And I always worry about it and I always complain about it because I wanted those muscles.
I think you are lovely.
GRANT: Thank you.
But I love that they sent you the costume design. Recently I spoke to Kate Herron and she told me that you were their first choice for the role.
GRANT: Wow. I did not know.
Does it surprise you, at this point in your career, that you are the first choice on someone’s list?
GRANT: It always surprises me, but what didn’t surprise me was that I had … Because I knew Tom Hiddleston socially and his career and I had seen him behind the scenes of the theater and stuff over the decades, we’ve always joked about playing father and son, because of our vague similarity in how we look. So when I saw that I thought, “Oh, I was chosen because I have a similar physique or look like Tom.” That’s what I thought, but I had no idea. Kate didn’t tell me I was her first choice. People never tell you that sort of thing. Maybe they think you’re going to outdo yourself, but I don’t know. I wish people would tell you. I’d love to hear, so thanks for telling me.

GRANT: Oh! Thank you. It was a pleasure to work with her.
Was there something specifically Loki-ish that you were trying to incorporate into the performance?
GRANT: I knew that rather than Tom Hiddleston’s God of Mischief, [Classic Loki] has this line explaining his past that he is the god of the outcasts, and has been so lonely and isolated on this planet, and is ready to be arrested by the TVA in order to reconnect with his brother, and ultimately sacrifice himself in Asgard , I thought it was a way to get into the character that wasn’t trying to emulate, because I couldn’t hope, which Tom has been doing so brilliantly and has been doing for over a decade now. So I thought that was the way to go.
Looking at your career, you have been a part of many really exciting franchises including Doctor Who and Star wars. Is there anything else on your bucket list? Are there any other franchises and / or other fantastic costumes that you would like to wear?
GRANT: Classic Old Loki with Muscles and Alligator-dot-com, the sub-sub-sub-series sub-series. This is what I want.
Considering the public reaction to Alligator Loki, I think there would be a fan base for it.
GRANT: Yeah and classic Loki is the only one who can talk to him and understand him. It’s an offer. It’s a screenwriter’s dream. Just do it.
