The song, which was released on July 27, 1987, was first uploaded to the video platform almost 12 years ago and established itself as one of YouTube’s first pranks for Rickrolling.

Astley shared his excitement for the milestone in a video shared on Twitter.

While relaxing by the lake, Astley said: “I’ve just been told that ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ has been broadcast a billion times on YouTube. It’s mind-blowing. The world is a wonderful and beautiful place. and I’m very lucky. ‘

YouTube celebrated the accomplishment with a clip from the video and “You never gave up…” written at the bottom.

The video giant announced that Astley’s clip reached more than 2.3 million views per day for April Fool’s Day alone.

Rickrolling continues to be a popular prank where users bait and exchange a disguised link that actually leads to the music video.

While the craze started with Astley’s video in 2006, it gained momentum and became a full-fledged success after Astley made a surprise appearance at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade and synchronized the song. with lips in 2008.
