After the announcement of Photokina's teaser, Ricoh is ready to do everything possible on the new advanced compact camera GR III.
This is a fairly large revision of the previous model, which includes a new sensor, a new lens and a new image processor. The APS-C size sensor now contains 24 megapixels and an ISO range of 100 to 102,400. There is no low-pass optical filter, although there is a simulation mode that reproduces the effect using an offset image sensor.
Like the GR II, the GR III has a 18.3mm f / 2.8 (28mm equivalent) lens, but it has been redesigned to improve image quality and reduce distortion and chromatic aberration. The new lens can also focus closer up to 6 cm in Macro mode with a .35x magnification. The nine lens aperture blades stop at f / 16 and the lens has a built-in ND filter with two stops.

If 28mm is too big for you, the GR III has two digital trimming modes to provide a 35mm or 50mm viewing angle. The resolution will change to 15 megapixels or 7 megapixels, respectively, when you switch to Crop mode. If the 28 mm width is not enough, you can use the wide-angle conversion lens at $ 250 GW-4 for a 21mm field of view.
Another novelty for the GR series: image stabilization behind closed doors. You can turn it on or off or set the kicker only when the shutter speed is less than 1/60 sec. The sensor change mechanism operates on 3 axes and is suitable for four camera shake stops.
For autofocus, the GR III will use a hybrid approach combining contrast detection and phase detection. The camera will be the first in the GR system to incorporate a 3-inch touchscreen with touch focus and touch support throughout the menu.
What has not changed, however, is the video recording capability of the camera. Like the GR II, the GR III records Full HD videos up to 60 frames per second.

* Support for 14-bit RAW files
* new Image Control setting to adjust saturation, hue, grain, contrast and more
* several customization options for external camera controls
* 2GB of internal memory plus SD card slot (UHS-I)
* Battery life of 200 strokes, compliant with CIPA standards
The GR III is shipped in March for $ 900.
