Authorities said Riley Howell, a 21-year-old UNCC ROTC cadet, accused the shooter of opening fire with a gun in a classroom last Tuesday, thus saving the other people's lives.

Howell was killed, along with Reed Parlier, 19, from Midland, North Carolina. Four other students were injured.

The Howell Celebration of Life Service will be held at 5 pm in the Stuart auditorium at Junaluska Lake, North Carolina, outside of Howell's hometown, Waynesville.

Howell's body was brought back to Waynesville earlier in the week with a police escort, CNN affiliate WBTV reported.

According to his obituary, Howell "was an adventurous guy who loved the outdoors, whether it was kayaking through coves on the ocean, canoeing down cold rivers, or screaming with excitement as He was trying to rotate the front of the rope to Fontana Lake. "

"Riley died as he lived, giving priority to others," reads his obituary. "We hope his example will resonate with everyone, and we hope others will respond, if need be, to the call to disinterestedness and do what is right without hesitation."
